This High Holy Day season, what prayer do you need to chant, what ethic do you need to reflect upon, what words do you need to hear, and what hand do you need to hold? During these turbulent times (and these extremely hot days), we need to stop and reflect in order to focus on our souls and the souls of those who suffer throughout our world, on our borders, and upon our city streets.
Our Days of Awe are a time to pray, to reflect, to hear, and to hold, and then to take action. As Reform Jews, our rallying cry is “Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof, Justice, Justice, You shall pursue (Deut. 16:20).” We are commanded to pursue justice wherever injustice is present. Our holy days prepare us for our biblical duties.
This year, we ask you to reflect upon these questions as you prepare for the High Holy Days:
- How can we find beauty in a world filled with anger and despair?
- How can we help the stranger including the immigrants stranded at our border and the homeless that roam our streets?
- How can we lead the way in creating a healthier world, where Anti-Semitism and Racism are kept at bay and equality for all reigns supreme?
- How can we find common ground with one another when opinions have come to overwhelm facts on a daily basis?
We look forward to praying and reflecting with you this High Holy Day season. We can only hope that our energies are renewed, giving us the strength to pursue justice.
We look forward to praying and reflecting with you this High Holy Day season.
